The MDA uses some conventions for managing topic maps:
- There is a global section of maps indicated by the URLs starting
with /mda/. The map /mda/ addresses the
root map there; all other maps are sub maps thereof. Topics
are then addressed relative to this root, such as
/topic1/topic2/topic3
- A parent map is linked with a submap simply by special topics
being themselves maps. This is indicated by these topics if they are
instances of mda-map. Whenever a topic is a map, the
navigation bar will display the text [ Zoom in ]. Activating
the link brings you one level down.
- At any stage you can reach via this navigation the maps above your
current position (indicated by '/'s) or the corresponding topics in
the upper maps.
- However, browsing of other maps is generally restricted to directly
identified maps: no index of all existing maps is provided.
- You can browse through a particular map simply by browsing through
the list of topics or via a detailed view on the topics.
- The interface also allows editors to define views on
complete map. With this it is possible to add information about a
sequence of topics in a map and precise control what
should be displayed for a particular topic and also how. The
idea is that this information is sufficient to generate slide shows
from Topic Maps stored here. These slides can then be viewed either
online topic per topic or can be downloaded in various formats.
- This implies that maps and also individual topics can be viewed in
a generic way as outlined above, but also in a highly profiled way.
To distinguish these differences in the URL addressing we have
introduced an additional syntax: If the original topic is addressed via
/map1/map2/topic, then a profiled view is addressed via
/map1/map2/topic@/.../my-view/ where /.../my-view/ is
the address of this view. (Conceptually we treat these views as Topic Maps,
although they are not implemented that way.)
- Every object (map, topic) can have a particular methods attached,
some of them might be active, some inactive depending on the nature of the
object. One is always the current. This is indicated by color codes.
